One-Off: Writing

Hello Everyone!

As I recently discussed in a post about my side projects, I work on stuff for video games. In classes so far, I have made a couple of different games in both Unity and Construct. In those examples, however, there has only been a lighter narrative focus. Excluding one that had a slightly more developed story, but was extremely short due the limitations. However, this semester I am getting the chance to write out a more fully fleshed-out story. This, for me, is exciting because of my love for writing.

Writing In Games

I’ve always found it interesting that games used to only have kilobytes to work with. Now we are on to games that can take up over a hundred gigabytes of storage. We are at a point where you can make pretty much as many text files as you want because they take up such little storage. Thanks to that, we have the ability to include tons of text in games. So much so that some games can suffer from having too much text. Since games are such an interactive medium, it’s important to let the player get a nice balance of text to read and game to play.

My Background With Writing

At the time of this post, I have been writing for a good five years or so. Embarrassingly enough, I started my journey writing because I wanted to impress a girl. It didn’t land me a date or anything, but instead a friendship, which was definitely what I needed. Due to this, I learned a few things about myself, the chief among them being that I love writing. In the years following, I have worked on improving my creative writing. Although it has resulted in very few completed stories, I am seeing progress in my writing. I hope to be able to use this improvement to eventually create more that I am happy with and happy to share.

Although I don’t have anything to compare it to, I am going to share a writing piece that I entered into a competition in high school. It is my hope to share my final for my Game Narrative class when that is finished at the end of the semester. But for now, here is this, for anyone who happens to stumble upon this and is interested in reading it.

That’s the end of my rant for today. Thank you for taking a moment to read and if you happen to read the short story, feel free to comment below and talk about it. I can always learn from things in the past, even if my style has changed. Thank you again and enjoy the rest of your day!
